Visually Impaired Certificate
Students should plan to complete the certificate program in two consecutive summers. This special program for standard teacher certification in Visually Impaired is expected to be completed in two consecutive summer sessions. The program is comprised of two components and will be limited to 15 students each.
Complete 18 hours from the following
- SPED 5330 - Seminar in Education of Exceptional Children

Complete 6 hours of SPED 5333 with the following topics:
- Instructional Strategies and Technology for Students with Visual Impairment
- Practicum in Visual Impairments
- SPED 5453 - Contemporary Issues in Special Education Specific to Visual Impairments
- SPED 5543 - Seminar Individual Studies

Complete 3 hours of SPED 5543 with the following topic:
- Eye/Vision Conditions and Problems in the Visually Impaired)
- SPED 5563 - Field Studies in Spec Ed

Complete 6 hours of SPED 5563 with the following topics:
- Introduction to Braille
- Orientation and Mobility for the Classroom Teacher
Credential Requirements
As a prerequisite for program admission, candidates must hold or be eligible to hold a standard teaching certificate or teaching license or be eligible for an alternative certification program with a plan of study for certification on file with NSU’s Office of Teacher Certification. All candidates seeking certification need to take the state certification test for visual impairment at the completion of the program. If seeking certification in any state other than Oklahoma, it is recommended that individuals contact the appropriate State Department for guidelines so they can be built into the program.
